St.Pauli CSC: Declaration of Solidarity
To whom it may concern
The members of St.Pauli CSC would like to express their solidarity
with all those fellow Celtic supporters who exercised their right
of free speech and expression in relation to the "Poppies issue"
and other recent developments that seem to lead Celtic further away
from her once commonly cherished culture and history.
We do not intend to comment the background of the "Poppies issue" itself.
In a society that claims to be free and open to dissenting opinions, individual
attitudes and descisions must be respected. At the same time, a
decision to support an initiative of such controversial background
officially at Celtic park must be open for discussion and - peaceful -
protest.
We are worried seeing additional pressure put upon the groups supporting
the peaceful protest by even stricter supervision, ejections from
the ground or even permanent bans. Additionally, it is disgraceful
that fellow Celtic supporters severely insulted the protesters.
The recent events are not unique. They are part of a long term
development of football becoming rather a business than a sport.
Modern football wants customers but not supporters who - in exchange
for the dedication of an often large part of their lives - claim being
an actual and influential part of the club and its culture.
This general development is not just against the core interests of a
small and romantic set of supporters. It puts the long term perspective of a club at risk.
The changes in the character of Celtic are especially alarming as
this club profits from its culture and history by far more than
most others. In many ways Celtic stands as a very positive example
for football supporters and clubs worldwide, looked upon in
admiration. This is severely at risk. We stand behind those who
cherish the tradition and heritage of this great club by adapting
the Celtic way to the road that lies ahead without losing its heart
and unique culture.
Reclaim the game! Reclaim the club! Solidarity is a weapon!
